Kratom Use in the United States

Coming from the tropics of the Southeast Asian region, including Thailand. Kratom has long been known in history to be a potent natural health remedy for a wide range of health problems including, diarrhea, lack of energy and an opium weening. Currently, kratom use has gained much attention from the media and the public, making it a very popular topic in western culture today. So, what is this increase in kratom’s use doing to people in the United States?

Consumers and Kratom in the US

For many, kratom is a potent healing substance to assist prescription drug addiction, including pain medication. These pain medications are extremely addictive and often people become addicted to them as a result of the extended use. A patient from the Paradise Valley, Arizona, Brandon Bird said that it helped him manage PSTD and chronic back pain he got from a body-building competition. For many people, they prefer using natural substances as an alternative to synthetic compounds. This is known as homeopathic medicine.

For others, kratom use is an excellent source of stimulation and energy, just like what they get from coffee, however, this depends on the dosage and strain of kratom chosen. According to other reports, kratom is also an excellent anti-diarrheal remedy, which can become an alternative for people who do not want to go for chemical treatment options. Another benefit is its sexual-enhancement property, which is said to help a lot of users increase their sexual performance by reducing premature ejaculation.

Additionally, kratom use in the US also has something to do with pain-killing, especially among consumers who use it for alleviating pain symptoms they experience from diseases, including arthritis and fibromyalgia. For these users, who often cannot afford typical daily drug treatments, kratom has claimed to be a valuable cheap way to help manage their pain. In these cases, people are using the herb therapeutically rather than recreationally.

According to other US consumers on popular discussion sites, kratom also helps in relieving pain after a sports injury because it helps the muscle calm down and the brain relax. Many also reported that they do not experience any side effects from kratom at all and claim it is so gentle and natural when used properly. On the flip-side, many have claimed that it does have used carefully and that it does have minor addictive qualities. However, many of these people said it is no worse than coffee on the addictive level and kicking it is no worse than quitting caffeine.

Kratom in the US media has been turning into a villain due to unprofessional and improperly reported news stories. They have been comparing kratom to synthetic drugs, including bath salts and synthetic cannabis. It appears as a very ironic way of comparison to kratom supporters. Due to this bad media hype and groupings with other illegal/dangerous compounds, kratom has obtained a very negative image. For these reasons, kratom has been banned in several right-wing states but not yet on the federal level.

Although kratom is being put in a bad light, many users who are receiving its positive effects are starting to lobby their appeal to authorities by signing petitions. These supporters are garnering attention as well and it is possible the movement in the cannabis industry will help the overall outcome of kratom. Many people do not have trust in the government for keeping "medical plants" illegal and these people might also bring the fight to the kratom market.
