What’s The Shelf Life of Kratom Powder?

Can kratom expire? If it does go bad then how long does it last? Any plant matter or other product, whether you’re dealing with kitchen spices, botanical herbs or potpourri, will eventually lose its kick and potency as the constituents fade due to natural degradation from exposure to the elements.

It’s the same with any organic item for the most part, exposure to the elements generally results in some sort of decay over a long enough period of time.

As a result, a question many new, or even intermediate kratom users may have about kratom is whether it has a sell by date, how long kratom lasts and how to store kratom to preserve it properly for the longest possible shelf life.

Kratom leaves are an organic product. Like any living matter there are certain things that will definitely cause long term damage to the plant and the compounds that are responsible for everything from kratom’s color, smell, taste and useful properties it may have on the mind and/or body.

Kratom may also have additional issues involving chemical reactions that occur overtime through oxidation. For instance, Mitragynine (kratom’s chief alkaloid) can decompose into mitragynine pseudoindoxil after prolonged exposure to oxygen. This particular issue is specific to kratom, so at this point, the question you may be asking yourself is how to make sure you receive fresh kratom and how to preserve kratom powder in storage.

Kratom’s shelf life, when stored properly, is about the same as most similar plant powders such as delicate tea flowers like green and white tea or chamomile. Consistency in storage procedures can be helpful in all these cases.

Keeping the kratom (or other plant foliage or powder) free from exposure to heat, UV rays, oxygen and humidity are an important start, especially if you’re planning on buying in bulk. Generally the greater the quantity you purchase, the greater the discount you receive which makes purchasing bulk kratom powder an attractive option.

In addition to this, many kratom consumers like to have several options to protect from stale strain syndrome. At this point, though, you will definitely want to ensure that you keep your kratom products stored well so that they will maintain freshness and potency as long as possible.

Oxidation is one of the first things we will cover because oxygen is nearly ever-present but invisible so it’s easy to forget the effect it has long term on nearly everything. Despite being vital to our survival and that of many other living things, oxidation is caustic and it’s long term effect can be similar to that of simple flowing water over a rock bed over a long period.

The caustic effect oxygen has can be witnessed nearly everywhere. Iron oxide (rust) is the result of oxygen. Antioxidants are effective because they can protect against or slow down some of the negative effects of oxidation on the cells.

One simple way to keep your kratom partially protected is to ensure that it is in a zip locking bag, stored in a mason jar, medicine bottle or apothecary style jar. The airtight seal you find in any canning jar will be somewhat sufficient for these purposes.

If you’re dealing with bulk kratom powder then investing in oxygen absorbers, multiple storage jars and a vacuum sealer may be a good idea. Vacuum sealing the kratom (a few ounces at a time) for long-term storage is a good idea.

Keep the strains, regions and vein colors labeled and dated so you can keep track of what’s what and when it was received and sealed. Consider this your “long-term storage” solution and then you might want to keep your “daily use” kratom (once again, labeled and separated by strain, vein color and region) in your mason jar or apothecary bottle.

You want to handle the bulk of your kratom as little as possible. Exposure to light, oxygen and some humidity, depending on your climate, is a possibility, eventuality or definite depending on where you are and the environment you’re working with.

As we mentioned before, oxygen is as vital to survival as oxidation is caustic. Similarly, all living things depend, in one way or another, on the sun. Whether it’s the plants, the only organic things that can manufacture carbohydrates literally from thin air and sunlight or anything that eats plants or things that eat plants.

Whether it’s the dye in paper or the scent of jasmine leaves, UV rays will slowly eat up and decay the vitality of stored plant matter of all types.

Odor absorption is another issue with kratom and other delicate tea flowers. If you’ve opted for storing your kratom in jars in a refrigerator or freezer, you will want to make sure you keep baking soda present in your refrigerator as well as keeping it as clean as possible to cut down on possibility of smells or even worse microbial infections that can thrive in such environments.

Never leave an unsealed bag of kratom either in or out of a refrigerator. A refrigerator should defeat much of the UV ray issue, oxidation concerns and temperature control problems, but keep in mind the issue of humidity if you use this or a freezer as your solution.

If you’re using a refrigerator for your kratom storage, make sure you keep the bags vacuum sealed except for what you will use during the week. Keeping track of your kratom usage is a good idea anyway.

Once you know about how much you use in a week you can divvy out the exact amount at the beginning of the week from one of your vacuum sealed bags and then reseal. Remember that any lingering air in your “weekly” bag can cause moisture or condensation to appear when you access your kratom.

Also remember to allow the kratom to reach room temperature before unsealing it. This will also prevent any moisture from humidity in the air and condensation to possibly spoil your herbs. A bit of moisture is all plant matter needs to start growing mold which is an obvious health danger.

Refrigerators and freezers aren’t the only way your kratom can end up picking up humidity or moisture though. If you’re storing kratom outside of a refrigerator make sure it’s not in a room with high humidity or near a laundry room, bathroom or other place where moisture in the air is present.

On top of refrigerators, near dishwashers or laundry rooms are a no go if you want to get the most out of your kratom and ensure that it stays as fresh and potent as possible.

The best of precautions will be useless if the material you get is already dried out. Make sure you always purchase kratom and other herbs from reliable vendors. Those with high turnover especially ensure that you’ll be receiving the freshest possible material.
