Mississippi is the birthplace of many American staples, from the Delta blues and Barq’s Root Beer to Elvis Presley and William Faulkner. It’s also home to the Marijuana Research Facility, a University-based project that holds the sole federal contract for producing marijuana.

Conversely, Mississippi is known for some pretty bizarre laws. For example, it is perfectly okay for a parent to have one illegitimate child, but if you have a second illegitimate child you better be ready to spend up to one month in jail.

Don’t let their forward-thinking position on the study of marijuana fool you. The Magnolia State is anything but lenient, and when it comes to kratom they may be more unwavering in their stance than they are on the subject of profane language.

Although kratom is technically legal in the state of Mississippi, you are unlikely to find too many areas where you can get away with selling it or using it. As of this writing, there are more than 30 counties and towns where kratom has been outlawed.

In 2018, a statute was proposed that would have banned kratom in the state, but this piece of legislation failed to pass committee. If the bill had succeeded, kratom’s chief alkaloids—mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine—would have been verboten in any form.

This would have spelled the end for many area smoke shops that regularly stock kratom extracts and enhanced kratom capsules. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and the bill was amended to exclude the Mitragyna speciosa plant and its indole alkaloids.

In the wake of the bill’s failure, county officials took it upon themselves to impose restrictions on kratom legality. One by one, 33 counties and cities enforced a kratom ban in their respective pockets of the state.

Columbus City and Union County were the first to impose their will on local residents, effectively outlawing kratom and erroneously classifying the Ayurvedic herb as a synthetic substance. This is misleading since kratom in its natural form is the farthest thing from synthetic.

In March of 2019, Caledonia criminalized Mitragyna speciosa which set off a domino effect in the state. Within a week, five counties and at least one other town followed suit. This was unfortunate for the residents of places like Alcorn County where opioid abuse is on the rise and kratom was considered a life saver by many citizens who were attempting to kick the habit.

You may be thinking, “As long as I stay away from areas where kratom is illegal, I should be alright.” Well, slow your roll, pal! The fight to outlaw kratom is one that is still ongoing.

Senator Charles Younger has thrown his support behind a statute that seeks to codify kratom as a Schedule I controlled substance. This legislation was introduced in January of this year and may gain momentum in the months ahead.

In the meantime, it is of paramount importance that kratom users keep themselves abreast of local developments and familiarize themselves with where the herb has been banned.

The following is a full list of the places where kratom has been outlawed in Mississippi:

  • Alcorn County
  • Calhoun County
  • Itawamba County
  • Lowndes County
  • Monroe County
  • Noxubee County
  • Prentiss County
  • Tippah County
  • Tishomingo County
  • Union County

It is also illegal in a number of cities including Belmont, Blue Mountain, Burnsville, Fulton, Guntown, New Albany, Oxford and Vardaman.

While all of the aforementioned towns and municipalities have banned or otherwise restricted the possession, sale and consumption of kratom, there are some spots where you can still legally obtain kratom in a variety of forms.

Kratom criminalization is mostly limited to the northeastern portion of the state. Our research points to kratom being legal to procure in Biloxi, Brookhaven, Canton, Clinton, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Laurel, McComb, Meridian, Natchez, Ridgeland and Vicksburg.

There are 14 shops selling kratom in the Biloxi area including the ever-popular Herbal Alternatives in Gulfport. Here are the top-rated kratom suppliers in 2020:

  • Koast Kratom (5.0 stars)
  • Tobacco Shacks (5.0 stars)
  • Smokey’s Discount Tobacco (4.8 stars)

There are 12+ shops offering Mitragyna speciosa products in Chimneyville. The following are the highest-rated kratom vendors in the city:

  • Humidor Cigars (4.7 stars)

There is a relative dearth of spots that stock M speciosa in the so-called Key to the South, but slim pickins is better than no pickins, am I right? Ya damn skippy!

Here are the four spots where you can purchase premium grade kratom powder in Vicksburg:

  • Doc’s Wholesale (4.6 stars)
  • Doc’s Tobacco Outlet & Pagers (4.4 stars)
  • Vapor World (4.2 stars)
  • Tobacco Store (4.1 stars)

I think you’ll agree that Doc’s is the place to be, particularly his wholesale emporium where staff are known to open up early to greet their many loyal customers.

We strongly urge our readers to think twice before buying from local headshops and filling stations. A number of kratom-related hospitalizations have been linked to smoke shop kratom brands like OPMS and Krypton. The latter was notoriously adulterated with a powerful and potentially dangerous synthetic painkiller.

Smoke shops and headshops are infamous for lacking proper dosage information and/or details about their kratom’s place of origin. When you’re purchasing Mitragyna speciosa, you always want to know where it came from, how it was harvested, whether it was properly tested for heavy metals and other contaminants, and whether a vendor offers a money back guarantee.

The best online sellers offer all of this and more; many e-commerce vendors provide lab results, kratom coupon codes, 30 day satisfaction guarantees, affiliate programs and other incentives. More importantly, they are clear about where they source their product from, so you always know that you’re getting what you paid for.

The following is a short list of our favorite online kratom suppliers:

  • Meridian Botanicals
  • Mitragaia
  • PDO Botanicals, aka Pharmacy Dropout
  • Phytoextractum
  • Urban Ice Organics, aka Natural Organix

Each of these businesses are GMP compliant and affordable, offering consumers the opportunity to obtain exotic kratom strains at a great value. They are trusted among customers and competitors alike.

No matter where you buy your kratom, make sure you are in compliance with local legislation. And be sure that the vendor you deal with does the same. Be safe, be smart and be well.
