Gold XL is one of the most talked-about products from the people at Royal Kratom. This Carlbad, CA kratom vendor has cooked up a batch of gold and yellow vein kratom powder that has left a vestige on the kratom community for the last decade, but if you haven’t already tried it you may have missed your chance.

Royal Kratom Gold XL kratom capsules became a mainstay on the smoke shop circuit in 2015 when Reddit users started a heated debate about whether such headshop brands were a bad thing. While many lamented the sky high pricing, others praised their selection in YouTube reviews.

In my 2019 Royal Kratom review, I explained that Royal Kratom Gold XL was a form of Maeng Da that boasted an invigorating aroma and a soothing overall experience.

At the time, Gold XL was available in powder form as well as caps. 30 grams cost $23.99 while a 150 gram pouch went for $39.99. But much has changed over the last year. Read on for all the details.

Royal Kratom Gold XL is no longer available at RK’s online store, but you can get your hands on the next best thing—Royal Kratom Gold XXL, caps that are larger in size and contain additional mgs of kratom powder.

Of course, this vendor leaves much to the imagination. It is unclear what makes these Maeng Da kratom caps gold since they do not disclose their methods. Whether it is fermented or dried directly in the sun is anyone’s guess.

On the bright side, they have been fairly transparent about the purity of their product line by posting lab results for each new batch of plant matter. You will find these lab results at the bottom of each product page.

A 150 count bag of Gold XXL caps sells for $32.95 which ain’t half bad, especially when you consider the size of each capsule. Every bag contains 75 grams.

In the past, I’ve copped to having a strong aversion to smoke shop brands. Not because they’re all bad, simply because I am unwilling to take chances after the Krypton incident of 2010.

For those who don’t remember, 2010 was the year that news broke of Krypton Kratom lacing their Mitragyna speciosa powder with 0-desmethyltramadol, a dangerous prescription painkiller. Since then we have seen a number of kratom products recalled by the FDA over potential Salmonella contamination.

Personally, I like to err on the side of caution when it comes to my ketum intake. It took a visit from my boy Frogger to change my mind. Frogger’s the type of dude who’ll try anything twice.

One time, Frogger accepted a challenge to eat half a sleeve of Saltine crackers in 45 seconds. After shoving less than a quarter of a sleeve in his mouth and chasing it with a Dixie cup of water, he was choking on cracker dust and gagging like crazy.

When a mutual friend told him that he’d lost the challenge, Frogger shrugged and finished the rest of the sleeve before accepting a second challenge—eat three packets of pork gravy without throwing up. Not only did Frogger succeed at this next challenge but every time I’ve seen him since he insists on sprinkling gravy powder on crackers and eating them in front of me.

Needless to say, Frogger has an iron stomach and a very disturbing palate, so I was taking his advice with a grain of salt (or, rather, a grain of gravy powder) when he told me I had to try these Royal Kratom Gold XL capsules.

Smoke shops are typically the last place I would buy kratom capsules since they are almost always overpriced, underwhelming and restrictive in size. But when Frogger showed up at my home office with a handful of Gold XL caps and said, “The first dose is on me,” I wasn’t about to argue.

“You feeling froggy?” he asked.

“Sure,” I said. “I don’t have any plans.”

This being a Saturday, I figured I could always fire up a dose of my own Super Green Malay stash if the Royal Kratom didn’t do the trick. After taking two large caps, I was hurled clean off my Holier Than Thou pedestal.

These caps were hella good and profoundly strong. After just 10 minutes, the initial pickup hit and I was feeling bent in the best possible way. It came on fast and lasted longer than nearly any smoke shop item I’ve ever tried.

The exhilaration was remarkable and the invigoration was undeniable. As I reached my first plateau, I turned to Frogger and told him I was crackers for Royal Kratom. : )

Bear in mind that this is just one man’s experience and should not be confused with a medical recommendation. Experiences vary widely from person to person, and kratom has not been approved for medicinal use.

Royal Kratom Gold may have worked well for me, but that doesn’t mean it will suit your personal needs. To get a more well-rounded view of this particular product, I strongly advise our readers to join one of the trusted online kratom forum communities where you can read user reviews, brand recommendations and vendor warnings.

When you buy kratom online, you should always look for a supplier with a 30 day money back guarantee and a seal of GMP compliance. In these wonky times, it’s always important to know where your kratom is coming from.

Look for a seller who provides detailed strain origins, third party lab results, kratom coupon codes and customer testimonials (good and bad). The top-rated kratom suppliers are members in good standing with watchdog groups and nonprofits such as AKA (American Kratom Association).

In my humble opinion, Royal Kratom Gold XL is one of those headshop selections that’s actually worth exploring. However, all users should approach this item with caution, especially since it is far more potent than plain leaf. Be safe, be smart and be well.
