There is more debate over the best kratom brands online than there are kratom strains on the planet. The same is true of kratom strains themselves, all of which seem to be in a knock down drag out fight to outperform each other.

This is how Mitragyna speciosa strains have been presented, both by kratom vendors and voracious internet consumers. Visit any of the online kratom forum communities and you will find countless enthusiasts struggling to outwit and outstrain each other.

One of the most heated debates, of late, concerns the differences and similarities of Green Malay Kratom and Green Vein Bali. These two disparate M. speciosa variants have been around for hundreds of years, but they’ve only caught on with Westerners in the last few decades.

Over the last 15 some-odd years, users have fallen into one of two groups—Team Malay and Team Bali, respectively. Like Twilight ‘tweens arguing over who’s hotter (some emo bloodsucker with Johnny Bravo hair or a brawny backwoods lycanscrote), users take to the mat to advocate for their go-to strain.

There are some fascinating distinctions to be made between Malay and Bali, not least of which is their individual alkaloid profiles. All of this and more will be explored in today’s comprehensive strain comparison.

For those who are new to the wonderful world of ethnobotanicals, kratom refers to any herbal solution derived from the leaves of Mitragyna speciosa leaves. These vibrant leaves reach full bloom on the evergreen Rubicae trees of Southeast Asia.

The Mitragyna speciosa herb is a member of the coffee family of plants and, as such, it possesses some deeply invigorating properties. The natives of Southeast Asia have historically chewed kratom leaves to support their body and mind while performing manual labor.

The region’s first apothecaries carried kratom leaf as a folk medicine. Locals would regularly brew and imbibe Mitragyna speciosa tea for its sundry aromatic qualities. In fact, it was widely regarded as a sacramental plant matter, one that was used in religious rites and other traditional ceremonies.

The Mitragyna speciosa grows in various forests throughout the Wild East, from Indonesia and Malaysia to Myanmar and Papua New Guinea. The kratom trees are known for their flowering and fragrant leaves.

Each kratom leaf has a central vein which occurs naturally in a variety of colors. Green, red and white vein kratom powder comes from the leaves of their corresponding veins. The hue of a kratom leaf’s central vein largely determines the resulting plant matter’s effects.

Each kratom cultivar has its own distinct mixture of alkaloids, flavonoids and polyphenols. Some contain higher concentrations of the terpenoid indole alkaloid 7-OH (7-hydroxymitragynine) or mitragynine than others.

Green Malay Kratom (GMK, for short) has its origins in Malaysia where it was first discovered by indigenous farmers. Although kratom has been illegal in Malaysia since the inception of the Poisons Act of 1952 (Section 30), it continues to grow in a plethora of areas across the country.

Farmers from neighboring countries have taken the cuttings of the traditional Malaysian cultivar and transplanted them to their own plantations. Although the name of this strain remains the same, its country of origins may vary.

Most Green Malaysian kratom powder is sourced from Papua New Guinea where the man bilong wokim gaden cultivate the lipti (tea leaves) at an ideal period in the harvesting season. Green Malay is grown in mineral-rich soil which yields large volumes of key chemical components.

As anyone who’s tried Super Green Malay can tell you, there is a trade-off when procuring top shelf kratom strains. With great potency comes great bitterness. Consequently, Green Malay Kratom is less pleasant to the palate than lesser M. speciosa variants.

It pays to spend some extra coin on buying kratom capsules, that way you’re not gagging and struggling to get this bitter brew down.

GMK is critically acclaimed for its many distinguishing attributes, not least of which is its moderate exhilaration and powerful animation. This amazing herb is said to ease discomfort at larger dosages, making it a great choice for those with a sensitive disposition.

Commonly reported effects of GMK include all of the following:

  • Warmth
  • Clean rejuvenation
  • Mild tranquility
  • Moderate exhilaration
  • Sharpened focus
  • Profound clarity
  • Alleviation of discomfort

It behooves me to mention that the FDA has not approved kratom for medicinal use. Therefore, any remarks about its purported effects here or by other users should be taken with a grain of salt.

No two people respond in the exact same way to GMK or other M. speciosa iterations. Every individual should consider their personal needs and sensitivities prior to brewing mitra tea.

Contrary to popular misconception, Green Vein Bali is not a strain indigenous to the island of Bali. On the contrary, this superb variant hails from the neighboring island of Sumatra where it is renowned for its extensive duration of effects.

The name Bali comes from the port that is used to export Green Bali and other strains to Indonesia and overseas suppliers. Sumatran farmers pride themselves on hand-selecting only the largest and most robust M. speciosa leaves.

Like Green Malay, Green Vein Bali (GVB) is composed of a large percentage of mitragynine, the indole alkaloid responsible for kratom’s serene attributes. But where Green Malay contains smaller amounts of other alkaloids, GVB tests high for paynantheine, speciociliatine and speciogynine.

Trace amounts of ajmalicine and (C9) methoxyoxindoles are also present within Bali leaf, although it is unclear what role they play in its efficacy.

Unlike Green Malay Kratom which is largely uplifting and “fast,” GVB is said to be rather somnambulistic at certain dosages. Both of these strains share elevated mood and general well-being in common, but Green Malay isn’t nearly as serene as its Bali counterpart.

Commonly reported effects of Green Vein Bali include the following:

  • Mild invigoration
  • Moderate restfulness
  • Soothing properties
  • Supposed endurance

As you can see, Bali Green is less animating and more tranquil than Green Malay. Whereas Green Malay is a mitragynine and 7-OH dominant strain, Bali Green is more speciogynine dominant, containing a larger overall number of active chemical components.

Both Malay and Bali are believed to be suitable for daytime use, although Bali may result in drowsiness, couch lock effect or impaired motor functioning at higher dosages.

By contrast, Green Malay is generally considered safe for daytime or nighttime use at moderate levels. As a matter of fact, some users prefer to mix it with their nighttime strain for an even-keeled experience.

As I said earlier, both of these variants are renowned for their uplifting and awakening aromas, inducing attentiveness, clean sensations and a purported sense of well-being. Both are popular among consumers due to their smooth balance of effects, although Malay is slightly stronger overall.

These two incredible cultivars are stocked by just about every smoke shop and novelty store from here to Honolulu. But very few vendors carry top quality plant matter.

The best sources for fresh, potent and pure plain leaf are typically found online. Trusted online vendors offer proof of GMP compliance and third party laboratory testing. They also provide customers with a money back guarantee and free samples.

Always look for a seller who offers detailed information, clear measurements, fair pricing and a promise of freshness.

The following is a short list of my top picks for Green Malay and Bali Green. Each of these brands has been thoroughly vetted. They are known for their quality, affordability and transparency.

  • Amazing Botanicals
  • MitraGaia
  • Phytoextractum

When buying kratom online, you should always ask yourself what you expect to get out of a given strain. While Green Malay and Bali are equally enjoyable, some may respond in a more positive fashion to one than they would to the other. Consider your needs and choose accordingly. Be safe, be smart and be well.
